Captain’s Log – Never say “Never”

When I was a little kid and well into high school, there were a lot of chores before school. Milking Rose our cow, feeding horses and sometimes lambs, gathering eggs. It was fairly regular to get on the bus and have to pick alfalfa hay out of my jacket and my hair.  I was pretty sure my future adult life would be hay and pet free – I was going to be footloose and fancy free with very little in the way of things depending on me and getting me dirty.

And here we are. Yesterday at my Pilates class when I took off my jacket to get ready for class, I noticed pieces of hay tucked all in the fabric. And then – a look in the mirror showed little pieces of timothy laced through my hair.

Indeed. Never say never.

The bunnies eat timothy hay. Lots of it. And I have to traipse out there first thing in the morning and last thing at night because they’re relying on me. How did it come to this. But it’s also a good trade-off. They are very soothing. Very adorable. I used to not believe in comfort animals, but now I have several.

We won’t go into how many there are now. But there isn’t a stereotype about bunnies for nothin’.

The breeding program has been halted, however. I’ve got enough bunnies to provide plenty of fiber to keep up with my rudimentary spinning skills. Until I get better with the spinning wheel we’re holding tight. And I have every color I want except chocolate. So a sweet, brown sweater will have to wait until I find a pretty chocolate rabbit and can spin much better than I do now.

So, while I pluck bunnies and practice this ancient art of making yarn – I’ll be right here…

…Keeping you Posted.
