Obituary - LCDR Paul N Pflimlin

LCDR Paul N Pflimlin, age 92, passed away on March 22, 2024 due to complications from dementia. He was born on Sept 29, 1931, in San Diego, CA.

He had always dreamed of flying, so in 1952 he began training to become a US Navy pilot. Paul said he could fly anything and he did, from props, to rotors, to jets.

In 1955 Paul met Mary Jo Hagerty, and after only six weeks they married. They loved family, travel, and entertaining. Paul was a jet pilot while serving on the USS Lexington. He had deployments to many interesting places around the world, taking his family to Iceland and Guam, as well as Texas and Florida. In Vietnam '67 and '68, he was one of the originators, a plank owner of the elite group Sea Wolves Hal-3, the most highly decorated group in military history. While there, he was a helicopter pilot, performing rescues, patrols and inserting and extracting Navy Seals. He had some legendary stories!

One of his proudest achievements was being instrumental in transforming the Fallon NAAS, an auxiliary air station, to NAS.

After retiring in Fallon, he became a well driller, then had a custom farming business for a time. In his later years, he taught English to Spanish speaking citizens at the community college. Gardening became his passion. He was the black gold king of composting, creating a beautiful environment that was open to garden tours. Paul is survived by his daughter Terry Curtis, son Mike Pflimlin, grandchildren Joe Curtis, Jordan Lindell- Schmitt, Kasey Nix, and great-grandchildren Frieda and Matilda Schmitt. He joins his wife Mary, his daughter Julie Lindell, and his infant son, Robert James Pflimlin.

Paul never lost his trademark sense of humor and was highly skilled in sarcasm, followed with his blue eyes sparkling and a mischievous smirk. That will be most missed. He lived in Fallon 56 years.

Paul was one of the most manifest men I have ever met. He was a good friends with my Dad and always had an entertaining story for the occasion. One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!
