Single Lane Closures Begin Monday

Single lane closures will take place on U.S. 50 east of Silver Springs in Lyon and Churchill counties beginning Feb. 12 as the Nevada Department of Transportation launches roadway repaving.

Beginning Feb. 12, two different lane reductions will take place as NDOT resurfaces approximately 17 miles of the aging U.S. 50 roadway surface from just east of the Silver Springs roundabout to the U.S. 50 Alternate Leeteville junction near Fallon.

  • Up to five-mile sections of U.S. 50 will be reduced to a single lane weekdays between 6 a.m.-6 p.m., with pilot cars alternating directions of traffic through the work zone. Speeds will be reduced to as low as 55mph in the work zone.
  • The highway will also be reduced to one lane near Lahontan River Campground for bridge replacement, with temporary traffic signals alternating traffic through the area 24/7 through the end of 2024. Speeds will be reduced to 25mph approaching the bridge work zone.

Intermittent lane and shoulder closures are anticipated to take place through summer 2025. Motorists should anticipate travel delays of up to 30 minutes. and are reminded to drive safely through road work zones.

Oversize-load vehicles will be restricted through the area, with a detour via U.S. 50A in the Fernley area. Oversize load information is available via NVRoads.com.

The road work schedule is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

In addition to resurfacing the roadway, NDOT will make the following improvements:

  • Left and right turn pockets will be added at select locations, including for safer turns for larger recreational vehicles to and from the Lahontan State Recreation Area North Shore Marina and Drum Point areas.
  • Solar lighting will be installed for enhanced visibility and safety at certain intersections.
  • Roadway shoulders will be widened to provide additional paved roadside safety and access.
  • Roadside livestock fencing will be repaired or enhanced in areas where needed, providing continuous fencing along the entire project and further reducing potential vehicle-animal collisions.
  • A currently unpaved roadside park and ride lot at Pioneer Way on the east side of Lake Lahontan will be paved.
  • The highway bridge over the Truckee Canal will be replaced with a wider structure.
  • Existing chain-up areas will be repaved, providing safe areas to install chains during winter weather.
  • Roadway signage will also be enhanced, including additional bike route signage noting U.S. 50 as a National Bike Route.

The repaving projects is part of NDOT’s long-standing pavement preservation to preserve state roadways before more expensive and impactful repairs are needed.

Is it possible to do this at night for those of us that work in Fallon coming from other towns? How long are the projects anticipated?

One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
