Commentary -- A Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Dahl writes from Fallon, Nevada

Finally Joe Biden named his Vice Presidential running mate, and it was, indeed, a woman as promised. It was also a black woman, as he said it probably would be. Lately I have been confused with the idea of eliminating all men and in this case eliminating white women, creating a small talent pool for the job. Strange, announcing that the job will go to a “woman” rather than to the “best qualified candidate.”

There is more to this affirmative action approach that puzzles me. The 1964 Civil Rights Act explains pretty clear, that hiring on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin is against federal law. I remember when President Johnson signed it into law after President Kennedy worked so hard on that bill before his assassination.

This law really helped in over-coming segregation and helped melting black people into the middle class. What else helped was sports, especially professional sports and the military. Black and white living together, working, striving, succeeding, failing together, doing life together, depending on each other, becoming community, ignoring race.

So my confusion is, is Joe Biden violating federal law by offering the job to a women only; discriminating by sex, and a black woman; discriminating by race, color and national origin. Kamala Harris’s mother came from India and her father from Jamaica, both became Americans.

If we vote for her, we will know that we are hiring her as Vice President on the condition of her being a black woman. Will we be breaking the law?  If so what will be our punishment?

Where am I going wrong? I have heard hardly anyone mention this situation. Are politicians immune to the civil rights acts?

I have no problem with Biden choosing a woman, a woman of any color. But he set the criteria for the qualifications and those qualifications were not to choose the best candidate who would accept the position.

The real point is that former vice president Biden announced to the world that he was going to discriminate on choosing a running mate.
