Movies & More: Toiyabe Trio Performs, “ParaNorman" and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"

This weekend, the nation will observe Memorial Day, when we, as Americans, honor and remember those servicemen who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. The Fallon Theatre owes a debt of gratitude to these heroes.

Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m., The Toiyabe Trio, a classical chamber music group, will perform a free concert on our historic stage for one night only. The trio is a part of The Toiyabe Chamber Music Society and features Dustin Budish, viola, Aaron Hill, Oboe, and Emily Barnes, harp. TCMS presents concerts free to create an accessible experience for diverse audiences of all ages to share the joy of live chamber music. They play in the greater Reno-Sparks area, Carson City, and outlying communities in Nevada and California. We hope to see a large crowd to support these musicians.

Showing Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25 at 6 p.m., is the movie “ParaNorman.” This movie is about Norman, a middle-school misfit who lives in the small New England town of Blithe Hollow. Young Norman can speak with the dead. His Uncle Prenderghast warns him that a centuries-old witch's curse on their town is real and that only Norman can stop it. When zombies rise from their graves, Norman must summon all his courage and compassion and push his paranormal abilities to the limit to save his fellow townspeople. 

Showing Saturday only, May 25 at 7 p.m., “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” The American musical was released in 1954 and stars Howard Keel and Jane Powell. In the 1850s, lumberjack Adam Pontipee lives with his six brothers in a remote cabin in the Oregon woods. Intent on finding someone to do the housekeeping, he marries boardinghouse cook Milly. Once at the cabin, Milly begins civilizing the coarse Pontipees. The brothers go to a town dance and meet some local women but get into a brawl. Missing the women they met at the dance, Adam tells his brothers they should abduct the women and take them back to their cabin. They do, and a culture clash follows that provides the basis for laughs and extravagant musical numbers. Admission is free.
