From tangy Atlantic Beach Pie to traditional sour cream raisin, local bakers brought their best recipes and patriotic spirit to the All-American Pie Contest on June 20 at the Wolf Center as part of the community's America 250 celebration.
Stephanie Zella claimed first place with her Atlantic Beach Pie, earning top honors in the contest that showcased homemade desserts inspired by America's long-standing pie-baking tradition. Michele Berney placed second with her Lemon Sour Cream Pie, while Lori Crook took third with her Peanut Butter Almond Pie. Honorable mentions went to Mike Berney for his Sour Cream Raisin Pie and Carol Johnson for her Berry Crumble Pie.
The contest was held at the Wolf Center and invited community members to submit homemade pies for judging while celebrating the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026.
Judges evaluated entries based on overall appearance, flavor, texture, and presentation. Contest organizers displayed the pies beneath patriotic decorations featuring America 250 branding and American flags.
The winning Atlantic Beach Pie combined a citrus filling with whipped topping and a crumb crust. Other top entries ranged from fruit pies to cream pies, giving judges a variety of flavors and baking styles to evaluate.
The event highlighted the role food traditions continue to play in community celebrations. Organizers designed the contest to bring residents together while recognizing one of America's most recognizable desserts.
The pie contest was one of several local activities tied to America's 250th anniversary celebration. Community events throughout the year are helping mark the nation's semiquincentennial and encouraging residents to participate in local commemorations.
