Churchill County High School hosted the 2024 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association State Tournament for Baseball and Softball this week at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex. Both the respective Greenwave teams came into the tournament as the 3A Northern Region as the number one seed.
The boys won their first game against The Meadows School out of Las Vegas on a home run by senior Baylor Sandberg to go up 4 to 3. In the next round, the Greenwave's 12-game winning streak ended when they fell 11 to 0 to Virgin Valley High School out of Mesquite. In the sudden-death game, The Meadows avenged the loss on Thursday by beating Churchill 8 to 3, ending the Greenwave's season.
It was a different story for the Lady Greenwave. They beat Pahrump Valley in the first round 5 to 0, Fernley 6 to 2 in the second round, and 11 to 1 in the championship game to become the NIAA 3A State Champions for the first time in six years. They finished the season with a ten-game win streak, including Regional and State playoffs, outscoring their opponents 47 to 5 over the six playoff games. Junior Vernita Filmore was deadly on the mound throughout the playoffs, with 15 strikeouts in the two games in the State Tournament.
