According to local officials, the new weir was fully opened last week for testing but is now closed to satisfy water orders for local water right holders and to fill Lahontan Reservoir.

The weir was built in a nearly miraculous 60 days, to prevent potential flooding in several areas of the county.

"Churchill County provided funds upfront for construction of the new weir for the protection of our community for this season and for the future. We are fortunate and appreciative that our local government officials had the foresight to make this project happen and to make it happen so quickly," said Ben Shawcroft, General Manager of the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District.

All avenues are being explored to reimburse the county including opportunities through the Bureau of Reclamation and FEMA.

As the weather warms, several agencies continue monitoring weather, snowpack, and soil conditions daily to model and forecast the amount of water that should be held in the reservoir versus how much water should be released. The forecast and modeling will be used to determine whether or not there is a need to open the weir again over the coming weeks.

"Right now, our obligation is to make sure we protect that precious resource by filling the reservoir," said Shawcroft.

One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
