The Nevada Department of Transportation has made substantial progress in a project to repave and improve two miles of U.S. 50 from Allen Road to Rio Vista Drive.
Since the project’s start in March, intermittent roadway shoulder, sidewalk, and single lane closures have been in place on U.S. 50 in downtown Fallon as crews improve existing sidewalks and sidewalk ramps to enhance roadway surface and accessibility.
As the sidewalk, sidewalk ramp, curb, and gutter improvements are substantially complete this month, crews will begin work on repaving the highway surface. Since July 10, overnight single-lane closures have been in place beginning at the intersections of Maine and Taylor Streets as crews prepare to repave the highway. Over the coming two weeks, crews will complete concrete roadside improvements at intersections, as well as patch sections of paving adjoining the new sidewalks and roadway gutters. There will be single-lane closures in place from Whitaker Ln to Allen Rd for approximately the next three weeks as crews work day and night shifts to complete the concrete flatwork on the north side of the project.
Major paving is scheduled to begin on July 24. Drivers can expect overnight single-lane closures throughout summer from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly on Sunday evenings through Friday mornings. The paving work is taking place during nighttime hours to reduce the impact on the daytime commute and travel traffic. Periodic daytime lane closures and shifts, parking restrictions, and sidewalk closures will also continue.
Currently, one lane of eastbound U.S. 50 transitions to a right turn lane at Sherman Street. As part of repaving, the turn lane will become a through/right turn lane that extends 500 feet east of Sherman Street for additional mobility through the intersection.
The paving work will continue through late summer, followed by utility, signage, roadway striping, and other final elements of construction. The project is scheduled to be substantially complete this fall.
At least one access to businesses and residences will be maintained during construction. Alternate pedestrian access will always be available through the work zone.
In 2020, NDOT also improved sidewalks and ramps on nearly two miles of nearby U.S. 95 in Fallon to enhance roadway connectivity, accessibility, and safety.
