The Free Bird Lifestyle in Fallon

The Free Bird Lifestyle in Fallon
Shannon and Macy Myers, store owners

Author: Jo Petteruti

The Free Bird Lifestyle Boutique, located by the Churchill County Library at 601 South Maine Street, is owned and operated by Macy Myers and her mom, Shannon Myers. Macy also owns the Free Bird Yoga Studio on the second floor, teaching Vinyasa, Power, and Hot Yoga in addition to Heated and Unheated Yin.

Macy said, “We are super passionate about our health and fitness, natural organics, and small-batch local products. We have our yoga studio right upstairs and with mom's hand-crafted jewelry, we wanted to provide a place you can get all of that. The timing and location were right, so we went for it.” She opened the shop on December 4, has been trying to get the word out about the business, and is planning to work with the Chamber of Commerce soon too. She finds various products for the shop by sourcing things locally from Reno, Tahoe, and the Utah area.

Shannon, who owns Desert Air Jewelry said, “I make all the jewelry here in Fallon and have been doing it since about 2018 now. I source my stones locally and use a lot of Nevada turquoise and Nevada state-shaped stones. I have the stones professionally cut and polished, then set them in either sterling silver, copper, or rose gold to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs. No two are ever alike, so it's just fun. I used to be a hairdresser but when COVID shut us down, I decided to focus on my jewelry-making instead. This my working retirement now.”

“We felt there was a market for local crafters making sustainable, organic, eco-friendly, chemical, preservative and paraben-free, everything to fit the healthy holistic lifestyle. We carry men's and women's facial and skin-care products, natural deodorants, soaps, men's and women's clothing, and jewelry,” Macy said.

The shop carries a clothing brand called 9-Foot Night Killers. The company is owned and operated by veterans and active-duty service members with the proceeds going toward treating combat stress. Information about the company's mission and product line can be found on their website, https://www.9fnk.life/.

“The rest of the clothing comes from a small California company that is eco-friendly using recycled material. We believe the clothing should fit the lifestyle. Environmentally conscious but also functional for working out as well as being casual and comfortable. The men's line is actually made by all men,” Macy continued.

The store also carries candles made by women-run small businesses and items from a barber in Reno. The leather-work hats are made by a lady in Elko, and a local youngster makes all of their soaps. “Many products also come from people we know. They are products we use ourselves, and now we're able to support their sales.”

Shannon described other product lines, “The Good Medicine facial line is made in St. George, Utah by a mother and daughter team that uses plants, sand and other things from the desert there to make their products. The hideaway bottles come from a small company in Oregon that focuses on reusability, and the line of teas that we carry are from Tahoe.”

Macy described her typical day saying, “It's the perfect location for us with our yoga studio right upstairs. I go up, do a yoga class, come back down, and open the store. It fits the free bird lifestyle, wearing and doing things that are good for you both internally and physically.”

With degrees in exercise science and nutrition, Macy is one month away from completing her Masters’s in Nutritional Science. Going forward, she is planning to offer health and nutrition classes.

Shannon moved to Fallon from Quincy, California when she was seven years old and has raised her family here.

Macy said of her business venture, “The best business partner to have is my mom, and we get lots of support from our family and friends too. We strive to always have new products to offer here so that every time a person visits, they will find new things.”

Great little shop. I’ve gotten many items there and love the products they carry. Nothing made in China. Please support small local businesses.
