FFA (Future Farmers of America) high school students visited E.C. Best Elementary School last week with some of their animals, teaching the younger students about animals, agriculture, and where their food comes from. This amazing idea blossomed from Natasha Emkey, a CCHS student and FFA Chapter Officer. She hatched the Farm Day visit because she thought it would be a great experience for the kids at E.C. Best where her mom Heidi Emkey is a teacher.
There was an array of animals for the students to touch and interact with. Several FFA students brought their own animals to the event too. Natasha Emkey brought her chickens, which the students loved seeing up close. Angel Arteaga showed off her goats and sheep, while Brittney Renfroe brought a duck, much to the delight of the second and third-grade students. Dawson Mc Knight brought larger animals, his market steer and hog, and Nicole Nelson even brought a horse.
The students were able to hold, touch or pet the animals. The FFA students made posters to help the kids learn more about the animals they were interacting with. It was, by all accounts, a wonderful hands-on learning experience. Tamra Hershbock, the FFA Chapter Advisor, is hoping to continue the tradition every year and add other elementary schools into the mix.
This is a busy time of year for FFA, with several events around the corner. The Nevada Junior Livestock Show is scheduled for May 5-9 at the Churchill County Fair Grounds. The annual FFA plant sale is set for May 13-15 at CCHS where tomatoes, beets, squash, and watermelon plants will be available. Due to COVID, the availability of flower plants are limited this year because of shortened student schedules. FFA will also be holding the Chapter Awards and Recognition Open House on May 22 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., followed by a ceremony from 1 p.m.- 2 p.m.
