Obituary - Lawrence David Matzen

Lawrence David Matzen, affectionately known to everyone as Dave, was called home peacefully on August 29, 2026, at the age of 69.

Born in Petaluma, California, Dave moved to Fallon, Nevada, at an early age, where he truly planted his roots. He spent many years in Fallon doing what he loved most—driving equipment, cruising around in his truck, and playing sports. He later moved to Wyoming and then back to Nevada with his family, working all over rural Nevada and in places like Australia. His final years were spent back in the place where he grew up, Fallon.

Dave dedicated much of his life to his career as a miner. He earned a reputation for his exceptional work ethic, toughness, and unwavering dedication to the trade. Outside of work, Dave was happiest spending an early morning on the golf course or sitting in the stands cheering on his grandchildren. He was undeniably their biggest fan—always ready for a loud cheer from the sidelines and a bit of heartfelt coaching advice afterward. Above all, Dave will be remembered for his infectious laugh and his ability to light up any room he walked into.

Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Nancy Matzen; his son, David Matzen; his daughter, Channon Toles (Chris Toles); grandchildren Bryson, Braelen, and Deja; his siblings, Maureen Weishaupt, Mike Matzen (Amy Matzen), and Kathy Hansen (Dave Hansen); and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A celebration of life will be held November 7, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fallon Golf Course. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and celebrate Dave’s life on what would have been his 70th birthday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to a local youth sports program of your choice.
