Viviane’s reviews — Trial of Chicago 7

Viviane’s reviews — Trial of Chicago 7

Aaron Sorkin returns to the film screen with his adaptation of the true story Trial of the Chicago 7.

Before starting the film, the interesting casting must be appreciated. With an interesting grouping that includes actors Eddie Redmayne (Theory of Everything), Joseph Gordon Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun), and Frank Langella (Swiss Family Robinson), the film sets off to be eclectic in performances and does not disappoint.

Sorkin, known for his fast and witty dialogue in productions like A Few Good Men and The West Wing, brings his same style to the 60s.

The film follows the trial of Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froins, and Lee Weiner. Alongside the seven, Bobby Seale was tried separately.

The most interesting aspect of this film, is the revealing scenes of the events leading up to the trial. Sorkin sneakily leaves out any scenes of the eight’s whereabouts in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention until they recollect during their testimonies.

The film follows the legal strategies of the seven member’s lawyer, the strategies of the prosecution, and the U.S. government’s secret strategies as well. This film is everything a Sorkin piece requires -- with long dramatic court monologues and small pockets of civic lessons that seem to always fit naturally in conversation.

Outside of writing the film is visually appealing as well. Although it is a period piece, there is no overuse of costume of real event footage. The film respects the time, while additionally making it modernized for the audience’s eye.

This is a fast-paced film that interests audiences by connecting past events with today, and respecting an audience member’s intelligence of the real world.

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
