Churchill County and the City of Fallon look to respond to the childcare needs of the community by expanding facilities to accommodate the increased need for childcare this fall.

This effort comes as city and county officials work to provide relief for parents as the school year begins in a hybrid learning model.

“Our intention is to provide childcare weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a variety of locations across the county by expanding our capacity and adding facilities to accommodate as many kids as possible,” said Jorge Guerrero, Churchill County Parks and Recreation department head.

The goal is to provide before- and after-school care and tutorial instruction around the school district’s new schedule so parents can work during the day knowing their children are being looked after in a productive manner.

Guerrero said to accommodate the anticipated increase in caring for children in kindergarten through 8th grade, Parks & Recreation will hire additional high school teens as recreation counselors and adult instructional aides to assist with homework.

“Parks & Recreation is here to provide a safe, structured environment for your student during their out-of-school hours. We are prepared to support your student’s virtual learning needs so you can be confident that your child is both having fun and being productive,” said Guerrero.

Parents who anticipate needing increased childcare services this fall may call Parks & Recreation at (775)423-7733 for more information and to be added to the interest list. More information and costs are listed at: CARE After School Program

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
