The First Responders Canned food-Drive Competition

The First Responders Canned food-Drive Competition
In 2016 Beth Riley, a supervisor with Banner Churchill Community Hospital Emergency Medical Services, says she got a crazy idea to have a friendly competition between the First Responder Agencies in Churchill County. This included Banner Churchill EMS, Churchill County Sheriff’s Department, Churchill County Volunteer Fire Department, Fallon Piute Shoshone Police Department, Fallon Police Department, and Nevada Highway Patrol. The event starts at Golden Gate Petroleum on West Williams Avenue. There all the agencies meet and weigh the apparatus of their choice by Department.  They then convoy to Walmart and park in between the two front doors where the friendly competition between the departments begins, based on who can receive the most perishable and nonperishable food in donations by weight. The convoy then travels back to the scales at Golden Gate Petroleum and weighs the apparatus again. The agency with the most food in weight wins bragging rights for the next year.  After they are done with the weighing , the convoy travels over to Out of Egypt Pantry and unloads each apparatus. Pastor Paul organizes his staff to help with that process. Riley said that in 2016 the Fallon Police department won. The second year Banner Churchill EMS won. This last year the Volunteer Fire Department won, and the groups exceeded their goal of 10,000 pounds of food, collecting a total of 14,508 pounds of food for the pantry.  In 2016 we had a total of 3,420 pounds and in 2017 8,420 pounds. The event will happen this year on December 1st, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to donate can support the agency of their choice between those times.     Never miss a meeting or community event – keep an eye on the community calendar at https://www.thefallonpost.org/events/ If you like what we’re doing, please support our effort to provide local, independent news and contribute to The Fallon Post, your online news source for all things Fallon.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
