Fallon’s Ward 1 voters will return to the polls Tuesday, July 21, after a ballot assignment error invalidated the June City Council election and prevented 881 eligible residents from voting in the race.
The special election features the same three candidates who appeared on the June ballot: Lori Norcutt, Ryan Swirczek and Daniel Doty.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Churchill County Administrative Complex, 155 N. Taylor St. All registered Ward 1 voters are eligible to participate.
Early in-person voting will be available at the same location from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, July 17, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18. Mail ballots were sent to eligible voters earlier this month. Those who received a mail ballot but have not returned it may still vote in person.
The new election was ordered after Churchill County officials determined that 881 registered Ward 1 voters had been assigned to the wrong precinct. Their voter registration records were not updated following changes within Nevada’s statewide election management system, causing them to receive ballots that omitted the City Council race.
County officials said the affected voter records have since been manually corrected and verified. Election staff in the county clerk’s office also implemented additional auditing procedures intended to identify future discrepancies between voter registration records and precinct assignments.
Before the June election was voided, unofficial results showed Norcutt leading with 161 votes, followed by Swirczek with 110, and Doty with 32. The results were never certified because hundreds of eligible voters had not received the opportunity to cast a ballot in the contest.
Unless one candidate receives 50% plus one of the vote, the two candidates receiving the most votes will move on to the general election in November.
