The Oasis Academy girls' golf team wrapped up another standout season with a second-place finish at both the regional and state tournaments, continuing a run of success that started with one determined eighth-grader’s drive to compete.
Coach David Holleran said senior Olivia Kutansky was “the reason we even have a girls' golf team.” Kutansky began practicing with the boys back in eighth grade, before Oasis officially fielded a girls' team. That first season, the program competed on probation with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, Holleran said, but it didn’t take long to prove the team belonged.
Kutansky went on to medal all three years she was eligible for state, finishing sixth this year to close her high school career.
Junior Meirra Cavanaugh continued to lead the team with another strong showing, taking first place at Regionals with a career-best round of 78 at Empire Ranch Golf Course and finishing fourth at State, held Oct. 14–15 at Toiyabe Golf Course. The State tournament brought mixed weather: a cold, drizzly first day followed by sunshine for the final round. The team held steady.
Sophomore Bailey Beebe earned “Most Improved” honors after posting her best-ever score of 88 at Eagle Valley East earlier in the season. Senior Emma Papada and freshman Ianna Sorono rounded out the lineup, with Sorono earning praise for her rapid progress in her first year of competitive play.
“Oasis girls’ golf has come a long way,” Holleran said. “The girls set a high bar, and the good news is the boys are just as competitive. We’re going to be right back in it next year.”
