Sheriff’s Office offers OHV Course October 11
Staff Report
The Sheriff’s Office will hold an off-highway vehicle, OHV, safety and driving course Oct. 11. The online portion of the class is offered by the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association, followed by hands-on instruction at Rafter 3C and Sand Mountain.
Participants should sign up for the free E-course on the ROHVA website. After completing the course, a number will be issued which is required to sign up for the class. Contact Bill Lawry at the Sheriff’s Office at 775-423-3116 or [email protected] to register for the course. Participants are limited, so sign up ASAP. Please bring the E-course certificate along with a copy of a valid driver's license.
Driving classes will begin at 8 a.m. at the Rafter 3C complex on the south side of Miners Road. Following an orientation, participants will learn about safety inspections, six driving exercises, and the written test. The trail portion will be in the vicinity of Sand Mountain. The trail course consists of class 1, 2, and 3 trails, and should be completed around 2 to 4 p.m. Self-rescue methods and emergency trail repairs will be shown and discussed. Please bring appropriate hydration and food supplies.
Successful participants of the course will be issued a certified OHV completion certificate. This may reduce insurance rates depending on your carrier. The free course is open to those with a valid driver’s license, and anyone under 18 must by accompanied by a parent. Participants must furnish their own OHV, up to two drivers per OHV, and are required to wear boots, a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, and an approved helmet. Additional info will be in the E-course.
