Obituary - Michael Charles Darnall

Obituary - Michael Charles Darnall

Michael Charles “Mike” Darnall, 60, of Gabbs, Nevada, passed away at the Kavanagh House on September 19, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Born on April 14, 1965, in Des Moines, Mike graduated from Pleasantville High School Class of 1983. That same year, he answered the nation’s call by enlisting in the United States Navy. After completing his military service, he continued supporting national defense through civilian work for the military.

Mike’s heart beat fastest at the racetrack. A passionate fan of sprint car events and a dedicated participant in modified stock car racing, he poured his spirit into every turn and lap. His own race car—painted purple with a red top—was more than just a machine; it was a tribute to his beloved mother, Marggie Darnall, and her ties to the Red Hat Ladies Club.

Beyond the roar of engines and cheering crowds, Mike found peace in nature’s quiet corners. Hunting, fishing, and camping offered him moments of connection—with the outdoors and with those who shared his love for life under open skies.

Mike is remembered with love by his sons, Brandon Darnall and Tony Darnall; his father, Douglas Darnall, and wife Carol; his sisters Angela Merino (Jose) and Kelli Kramer (Jeff); and his brother , James Darnall. His memory also lives on through an uncle, several aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, a great-nephew, and a great-niece, along with an amazing group of friends who will continue to cherish his presence in their hearts.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Mike lived with purpose and passion—his legacy etched in tire tracks on dirt ovals and laughter shared around campfires. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

Mike's family would like to thank the staff at the Kavanagh house for their exceptional care and for honoring Mike.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, Iowa, with interment following at the Peoria Cemetery.  Donations may be given to the family as a memorial gift to a raceway.

I met Mike at NSAWC working with him at work and on the track, truly a very good mechanic in both worlds. Taught me alot, his knowledge was unreal. I helped him to repair his IMCA at times at my home shop and again he Taught me more. I will miss this coworker and fellowship at the track. Other racers knew when Mike was on the track by the sound of his moter...trust me. Rest brother, I'll see you in heaven tuning something I'm sure. Duane Morgan

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
