Captain's Log

It’s 12:53 pm and The Fallon Post is due to the printer in one hour and seven minutes. Likewise, with the Fernley Reporter. Our fearless leader, aka publisher, aka bunny ranch cowboy, aka owner of so many cats (there are currently three under my desk sleeping), aka Rachel Dahl is trying to finish the layout for the Fernley paper and really trying to look like she is not panicked about getting it finished in time. Cheryl asks the question we all are thinking, “Has she done the Captain’s Log?” From behind her huge screen I hear Rachel say, “Denice, do you want to do the Captain’s Log this week? I’m pretty sure she picked me to do it because I have the three sleeping kittens under my desk instead of hers. Yep, it’s pure jealously that has brought me here.

You need to be prepared to do unexpected things in this very busy office, like being asked at 12:53 pm to write the Captain’s Log and calmly answer ‘sure’. Also, on the list of the unexpected: there are kittens here and lots and lots of plants that are all now dependent upon me to feed and water them. And, as Cheryl said today, you always come to work on Tuesdays because its chicken verde soup day at The Courtyard and you know we all are going to get some of that … and maybe a cookie.

I have been here just over a year now in my semi-retired status. It is a whole new world this newspaper stuff. They keep different and very long hours. Rachel, Leanna, Nancy and Christy are willing to attend all sorts of events to get a story and a picture to share with you, our readers. They seem to know everyone and what they are up to these days. Their energy and their curiosity seem endless.

And another thing, I just love that so many of our subscribers are people I know, many for most of my life. When they call and have questions or problems, they are unfailingly kind and understanding. I have come to appreciate this little town even more by working at the newspaper. There are just so many good things that happen here, and so many good people that live here.

So, while Rachel continues with the Fernley layout (it’s 1:26!) and I sit here typing with three sleeping kittens under my desk, the rest of the staff will be right here keeping you posted.

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
