In a bit of an ironic moment last week, the Lowry High School girls golf team hosted a preseason Icebreaker tournament, also featuring Elko, Spring Creek and Fernley.
Named for breaking the ice and getting to know other players in a tournament setting, the girls did not think they would get late-summer weather that was iced down.
Cool temperatures in the 60s and high winds greeted the players at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
The regular season began on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, in Dayton and Winnemucca, respectively. Results were not available at press time.
The Northern 3A makes its Elko County swing at Spring Creek Golf Course on Monday and Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Tuesday.
Fallon hosts its tournament on Monday, Sept. 22, and Fernley hosts at The Ranch at Desert Lakes on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
This year, the Northern 3A is conducting a regional championship, with the 36-hole tournament starting on Oct. 5 at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The final 18 holes will be played at Tahoe Donner Golf Course on Oct. 6.

State Qualifying
For teams and individuals, a qualifying standard will be utilized. The standard must be met in the league/region tournament in order to advance to the state tournament.
Team Qualifying

3A team qualifying standard: team score average of 140-over-par per round.
Teams within the maximum allotment per league/region and that meet the qualifying standard may bring four golfers, regardless of whether or not each golfer meets the individual qualifying standard.
A fifth and/or sixth golfer must meet the individual qualifying standard of 35-over-par per round in order to join the team at state.
Exception: If a team’s fifth golfer does not meet the individual qualifying standard, the team may bring a fifth golfer to serve only as an alternate in the event one of the four team members cannot play due to injury or illness.
Individual Qualifying
This section also applies to a qualifying team’s fifth or sixth golfer.
The individual with the best (lowest) score not already on a qualifying team is guaranteed a spot in the state tournament. Additional golfers up to a maximum of six may advance to state only if they shoot a qualifying score.
3A individual qualifying standard: score average of 35-over-par per round.
