Obituary - Harold (Hal) Charles Edward Newman

Long-time Fallon resident Harold (Hal) Charles Edward Newman, 93, passed away at home on January 21, 2024. He was born on July 31, 1930, to Dorothy Adele (Stroebel) and Harold Philip Newman in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

While growing up, Hal went to schools in California, Arizona, Tennessee, and Michigan before graduating from Churchill County High School in 1948 and the University of Nevada, Reno in 1960 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He was a Naval Veteran and a Registered Professional Engineer working for several mining companies, culminating as the National Sales Manager for Kennametal, Inc. In 1966-67, Hal was the Nevada Chairman of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. During his career, he authored or coauthored a variety of patents and shared his knowledge by teaching at the Fallon campus of Western Nevada Community College.

Hal spent his free time hunting, fishing, camping, piloting his small aircraft, and visiting his parents in Berlin at Ichthyosaur State Park. He belonged to Toastmasters International and was awarded their highest honor, the Distinguished Toastmaster. He was active in Knights of Columbus, Fallon Rotary, where he served as President, and Boy Scouts, where he was himself an Eagle Scout, as were several of his sons. From 1986-2008, Hal served as Chairman of the Churchill Co. Mosquito and Weed Abatement District.

Hal is remembered for his selfless Christian spirit and his willingness to help anyone in need. Hal was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna, and their son, Thomas.   He is admired and loved and will be sorely missed by the family he left behind: his wife of over 46 years, Phyllis; nine children: Kathleen (Kevin Kelly), Kristine (Roc Stacey), Karyl (Russ Brown), Steven (Tamara Sheppard), Luke, Jacqueline (Daniel Hickman), Rebekah (Will Woolsey), John, and William (Erin Doerr); 11 grandchildren: Nicole Thompson, Jessica Newman, Christopher Phelps, Thomas Newman, Kayla Good, Shane Kelly, Justin Kelly, Ryan Brown, Emma Woolsey, Bob Woolsey, and Charlie Hickman; and four great-grandchildren: Noah, David and Joel Thompson and Solara Newman.

A private family service was held for Hal at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Fernley, with burial at the Northern Nevada VA Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church parish hall on 27 July 2024 at 11 a.m. and is open to all. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Harold Newman’s memory to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Fallon, NV, or to the Fallon Rotary Club, Rotary Foundation, endowment PO Box 93 Fallon, NV 89407.

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
