Commentary -- Thoughts on Abortion

The new abortion bill from the Nevada legislature is now on its way to the Governor for his expected signature. The Governor of New York signed a bill into law that seems to allow for abortion up to the due date.  The legislature and the crowd of people who gathered for the signing cheered and applauded their approval.  The whole town celebrated.  The Commonwealth of Virginia followed with a similar law of their own, it failed by a close vote.  Other states appear ready to follow New York. On the other side, some states are passing very restrictive abortion laws attempting to give the unborn some protection, hoping for some favorable court decisions. Now in Nevada our new governor and his legislature have taking up this divisive issue, and have followed the example of New York. The slavery question from the colonial period through the civil war was so divisive the very creation of the government had to try to ignore it just to get a union.  The courts got it wrong.  Four years of dreadful bloody war finally ended slavery. Our present day equivalent of the slavery question, or human rights, is the polarizing views of abortion, not on geographic and economic lines but more on a divide of culture and tradition.   Some say it is immoral, sinful, and detrimental to receiving the blessings of heaven.  Some say it is necessary for a healthy happy society.  The ones who suffer most, like the slaves, are the ones who do not have a voice. -- Joe Dahl     Sign up to receive updates and the Friday File email notices. We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
