Mayor Proclaims "Florence Sloan Day"
Staff report -- Fallon pioneer, Forence Sloan turns 99 years old today and was honored this week by Mayor Ken Tedford who officially proclaimed May 11, 2019 as "Forence Sloan Day." Florence Hellekson was born on May 11, 1920 in Farmington, New Mexico and moved to Fallon when she was nine years old. She was married in January of 1938 to James Sloan and they had two children, James and Janice. She became a nurse and served the Fallon community for 14 years. She and James ran the family ranch together for 56 years and when he passed away in 1978 she continued to run it until moving into the city in 1994 where she has lived on her own for the past 25 years. Her son, Jim Sloan still runs the ranch today. Florence is a long time member of the Artemesia Club and was also a member of the Old River Women's Club and the Farm Bureau. She has five grandchildren, Andrea, Mike, Gina, Shawn, and Jason; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brittani, Taylor, Kendra, Kirsten, Sloan, Hunter, and Chase; and a great-great-granddaughter, Harper Marie. The proclamation calls Florence an exceptional person and a wonderful combination of wrmth, kindness, laughter, and love, who values the importance of family. "She is the type of woman to be admired, a woman who has taught her family how to live and how to love."             Support local, independent news – contribute to The Fallon Post, your non-profit (501c3) online news source for all things Fallon. Comment author: Patti Cole Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories. The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses. Her dad Ted was my dad's brother. I never knew Ted or Betty, but I wish I did. I am 73 and live in IL. I am building my family tree and see where Betty has fit in. Blessings to you Curt and family.
