The aroma of coffee permeates throughout the Oasis Academy campuses on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The Comprehensive Life Skills students deliver coffee orders and joy to staff on these days. The staff order coffee through a Google Sheet and pay $1 to have it made and delivered. Orders can include creamer and other coffee flavorings. Students Tyler Wallace and Kolby Doud enjoy making the early morning deliveries and have learned through the process.

“I enjoy it and like talking to people. I’ve learned how to use a coffee pot and business skills,” explains Doud. Wallace continues, “It is nice to walk around campus and see the teachers. I enjoy adding creamers to the coffee.”

The program was shut down last year due to COVID and Program Advisor Amanda Yanger is grateful to have it back in action for the students. “It’s a great opportunity for the students to learn and interact with the people on campus. They gain valuable communication skills, life skills, and business skills through serving coffee. The money raised supports the boys’ weekly trips to Safeway to purchase ingredients for cooking. They learn how to plan meals, budget, and cook all thanks to the staff supporting the weekly coffee cart.”

Alumni Feature: Ethan Smith

As the youngest in his department at Sierra Nevada Corporation, Ethan Smith reflects back on his time at Oasis Academy. The 2017 graduate has very fond memories of the friendships he developed through study groups and extracurricular activities and of the school dances.

Smith doesn’t believe just one thing led to his success while in school but credits multiple people for their influences. “Spending time working with the counselors had a major impact on my perspective in classes. After talking with Mr. Lenon and Mrs. Venturacci, I was always ready to work harder and do my best. Both were influential in pushing me forward.”

WNC professors through the Jump Start Program also impacted his academic career, “I really enjoyed both Calculus 1 and 2 with Professor Eric York. Since it was such a small class, we all grew really close in our trials by fire. But I think my favorite teacher was Professor Holly O’Toole. She was hilarious and interesting all at the same time.”

His advice for future Bighorns:Use the things you learn everywhere and see that they will help you everywhere. The worst kind of education a person can have is the one that is never used.”

Ethan received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UNR and is currently working on his Master’s Degree in Business Administration through Western Governors University. He hopes to transfer to the engineering department at Sierra Nevada Corp in the next few months.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Sophie. We still remember her from your visit to Edmonton when Sophie was just a little girl. I can still see her standing on the sidewalk beside your car and waving madly with a big smile as if she’d always known us and we were now best friends. We are so thankful to know a deep faith runs through your family and you know that Sophie is freed from her pain and is at home with her Lord and Saviour.
