Dove hunting season opened Sept. 1, and the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the community that gunfire may be more common in certain areas.
According to the sheriff’s office, the sound of gunfire alone does not necessarily indicate an emergency. Residents who hear gunshots in areas where hunting is common should not call 911 unless there are signs of an immediate threat or emergency.
An emergency call is warranted when gunfire appears to endanger someone. That includes seeing a person shoot toward a home, occupied building, roadway, vehicle, or another person. Residents should also call 911 if someone has been injured or threatened, or if any firearm activity presents an immediate danger.
The sheriff’s office also reminded hunters to follow all hunting and firearm laws, practice safe firearm handling, and respect private property. Hunters can help prevent accidents by identifying both their target and the area behind it before firing.
