Kicking Off a New Season: The Quarantine Redemption Story

Kicking Off a New Season: The Quarantine Redemption Story
Greenwave and Spring Creek Players head-to-head during the third quarter. Ashen Mindnich/The Fallon Post

On Saturday March 13th Churchill County’s high school football teams played against Spring Creek at home. Both the Junior Varsity and the Varsity teams showed a very promising start to their 2021 season. The JV Greenwave team swept away the Spartans with a win, 46-6, while the Varsity team also managed to secure a big win, 44-7.

In normal conditions, the bleachers of a high school football games are jampacked with both fellow students and parents of the players. The band is blasting, and the cheerleaders are getting everyone amped for the game, especially the first one of the seasons. This year, however, is not a normal one. The number of spectators has been limited to a 100 people, the student section is non-existent, and the band is nowhere to be seen. Everyone who enters the field must have their temperature checked at the front gate, and masks are required for everyone spectating, including players on the side-lines. The stands look like a ghost town, the noise is at a minimum and the excitement is below average. One could say the expectations for the upcoming season are low, despite abnormal conditions.

Varsity showed amazing chemistry both on and off the field. Watching them play was entertaining and engaging. The Greenwave started off strong with two touchdowns on their first two possessions, both run in by #6, Levi Andrews. On the Spartan’s next possession, they managed to score leaving it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Greenwave’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game was #8, Avery Strasdin, who offered up some amazing plays. At the start of the second quarter, he threw a four-yard touchdown pass to #15, Kenji Armbruster, giving the Greenwave a comfortable 21-7 lead. The Greenwave continued the second quarter with a punt return which turned into a touch- down by #18, Tyler Austin, giving the team an even larger lead. But the momentum did not stop there, Levi managed to run 16 yards for another touchdown, #22, Josiah Rosario intercepted the ball thrown by #7, Grant Brorby of the Spartans, and #81, Sam Robert- son successfully kicked his 33-yard field goal attempt ending the half at 38-7.

During half-time the team rallied together to discuss how they had been performing thus far. The energy of the team and coaches remained high, as they shared some laughs and new strategies to enter the second half of the game. While the third quarter did not result in any scores, the game was still exhilarating to watch. And at the beginning of the fourth and final quarter, Strasdin ran the ball himself giving the Greenwave their sixth touchdown of the day.

While the players on the field kept the momentum high, their teammates on the side-lines helped keep them encouraged to fight the entire game. The spirits of everyone there seemed exceptionally high, given this was their first real game after not having a season last year. Words of encouragement were thrown around all day, “Score is zero, zero guys,” and “keep it going, game is not over yet,” showed just how excited these young athletes were to be back on the field and playing. While their break from competing was a long one, the interruption did not show in their play. The players stormed the field with the same energy as a toddler on a sugar high. There was never a break in the drive, even coming out the half the players bounded back to their side-line and warmed up their muscles to finish out the game strong.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
