Oasis Academy Basketball Takes the Ore Cart

Oasis Academy Basketball Takes the Ore Cart
Submitted by Dusty Casey, photos courtesy of Heidi Hockenberry-Grimes —  The Oasis Academy Varsity boys and girls basketball teams won their third straight "Battle for the Ore Cart" against charter school rival Coral Academy of Science on Saturday night.  The games were the final contests of the season for both teams, with a year's worth of bragging rights and the coveted ore cart trophy at stake. The rivalry was created three years ago when the school's two athletic directors, Dusty Casey (Oasis) and Glenn Wallin (Coral), decided to create a fun and unique rivalry game that the two public charter schools would vye for, as neither were eligible for NIAA playoffs at the time.  The battle pits both schools’ varsity basketball teams against each other in a combined score contest, whereby the school with the highest combined score of both games wins the trophy. Saturday night was the first time either school swept the night, with Oasis Academy coming out on top in both games.  The stands at the City-County gym in Fallon were packed with loud fans from both Fallon and Reno, and the night was filled with high stakes competition, raffles, half-time activities, and most importantly an awesome group of kids representing both of these amazing institutions.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses. Her dad Ted was my dad's brother. I never knew Ted or Betty, but I wish I did. I am 73 and live in IL. I am building my family tree and see where Betty has fit in. Blessings to you Curt and family.
