To celebrate the 70-year anniversary of “Operation Haylift”, the Fallon Community theatre will present Hollywood’s portrayal of the exciting adventure featuring Bill Williams and Ann Rutherford.
This film depicts Operation Haylift — a TRUE event about the winter of 1948-49 and the involvement of the Fallon Air Base with the effort to deliver feed to stranded and starving livestock in the remote areas of Nevada. There will be three special showings; Thursday, February 21st at 5:30 p.m., Saturday the 23rd at 5:30 p.m., and Sunday the 24th at 12:30 p.m.
The winter storms of 1948-49 were the heaviest in the west since 1889, and thousands of residents and more than one million cows and sheep were stranded in remote regions of Nevada and other states. The mission was to drop bales of hay from planes to the hungry livestock on ranches around Ely and Elko. U.S. Government officials and Nevada ranchers organized Operation Haylift to prevent mass starvation among the animals struggling in the frigid high desert. Hundreds of tons of hay and other feed were loaded into C-82 Flying Boxcars from airports in Fallon and Minden.
Come out and enjoy a piece of local history on the big screen.

Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories.
The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it.
Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all.
An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile.
For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
