County Update on COVID

County Manager Jim Barbee reported to the County Commissioners yesterday at the regular commission meeting that Churchill County continues to “see an uptick” in the cases of COVID. In his covid response report, Barbee said the county is now at 592 positive cases since March, with 298 currently active. There have been 296 recoveries, and 12 people are now hospitalized. There have been eight deaths. Of the 12,126 total tests administered in the county since March, 75 of those have been asymptomatic positive cases.

Local surveillance includes results from Banner Churchill Hospital, the Renown Clinic, NAS Fallon, the local physicians, long term care facilities, and the Fallon Tribe.

“There is a strain on Banner,” reported Barbee, “with the many positives admitted they still have room but they are planning to expand the number of beds with the surge tent that was installed in the parking lot earlier this year.” He said it is a strain on the staff, but the struggle is not unique to Banner. “We are also seeing this in Washoe County which just released an all points bulletin for medical staff help as they open the surge expansion there.”

Tuesday night, Shannon Ernst, Director of Social Services tested 284 people in the drive through testing, which is the largest single test date so far. Next week the Thursday testing will be moved to Wednesday, due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, and Barbee said the first week of December, testing will be expanded to five days a week.

With the strain on the hospitals, I am not sure why I saw a lot of families in Fallon Walmart today not wearing masks and why I saw some very dangerous driving on Fallon roadways today. Do people not understand the hospitals are stressed, so we should not be doing things to add to their caseloads?
