Here is what is going on at The Post right now… we’ve just spent the last week creating our first print edition on our new printer and we're getting our second edition ready for this Friday. What a fun experience. We hope you like it – you can pick one up at the Qwik Stop next to the Depot, at Harmon Junction, or 3-D Ship next to Pizza Barn.
Although we all had the best time ever, we’re exhausted and a little discombobulated. We didn’t really know what we were getting into. The shop (152 Industrial Way if you want to stop by sometime) Friday night when we finally started printing at 9:30, looked like a hurricane hit it after a week of note taking, writing, designing, drinking copious amounts of coffee, and learning how to mail merge in InDesign. Wow. Leanna and I have only eaten in restaurants close to the shop in 30-minute runaways to let our brains clear, and her dog and my kitten don’t even recognize us anymore.
Our little Viviane who we’ve Christened “our wee-baby newspaper girl” assured us the all-nighters were not a problem since she has just graduated from college and is still used to them.
Denise E. brought supplies, Denice P. proofread (bless her heart the one page with mistakes we dropped in AFTER she had torn through it, be patient with us), Susan W. tracked down distribution locations, and CJ Hadley was the paper angel. So many of you helped in so many little ways – this is totally a community effort and the definition of a community paper and you will never know how grateful we are. I am.
It was pretty emotional when the first copy came off the printer. Of course, thinking of Anne Pershing – I always have through all of this the past two years – but last night I was pretty sure she was right there, giggling and I could hear her, “Rachel, you little $@#*, you did it.” There was also a sweet memory and tip of the hat to Tim Findley who always thought we should start a community paper. He actually got a bunch of us together at one point, maybe in 1994 or ’95, and we did a couple versions of a little newsletter called “The Magpie.”
Anyway – there are so many moving parts to this project and we’ve just jumped in without tackling all of them so I know there will be questions. Let me try to explain a little and have you help us spread the word if people ask.
We will put out a list of places people can buy the paper for $1.00. There are 16 merchants around town right now and that list will go on the website and in next week’s paper. We are also waiting on some $$ that will go toward buying some newspaper boxes and we think we’ll get four and put them around town but for now distribution will be your local merchants or mail subscription.
So, the mail subscription – there is a form in the paper this week you can fill out and mail back with a check for now. It will run $9 a month which includes postage, or $78 a year includes postage. We’ve had some trouble getting the online store up and running but should have that ready this coming week if you want to wait and subscribe online with your card. We’ll send a note out when that’s ready. For those of you who do the subscription, we will mail your paper Thursday and you’ll have it Friday.
While the paper printed for the first time last week, I noticed so many things we didn’t catch that I wanted to fix, but my hope is you’ll be forgiving and support us and watch as we grow and learn. Suggestions are always welcome as are letters to the editor, guest commentary, article ideas, and breaking news tips. And photos – send us your gorgeous community photos. Thank you, Larry Neel.
