Universal Technical Institute High School Top Tech Challenge

Submitted by David Gonzales, Auto Instructor at Churchill County High School -- For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the event, the Top Tech Challenge is an opportunity for students from high schools from Northern Nevada, Oregon, and Northern California to compete in either Diesel or Automotive Technology competitions. Participating students may win Universal Technical Institute scholarships as well as prizes for their classrooms. Each school may send one team for Automotive and one team for Diesel. Teams are made up of two students – juniors or seniors. This competition tested the students’ knowledge obtained during their automotive high school program. They competed in a hands-on and written tests in
  • Parts identification
  • Scan tool diagnostics
  • Brake diagnostics
  • Electrical systems
Dawson Lapp (senior) and Caleb Haynes (junior) represented Churchill County High School. Out of 22 teams they placed 7th earning a place to have them both receive a 1000$ scholarship to UTI. These students worked hard after school to help them get ready for this competition, even at home studying on the subjects covered for the competition. Being a new teacher and having no idea how this competition works, I am very proud of them in the experience and looking forward to more experiences like this in the future.

Who and what they REALLY were. Because they were devotional and IMPORTANT to the humans they connected with. The content of their life bled so that others could feel their own life’s importance. Teachers of justifiable life and art. That all can absorb and use as the best fertilizer for THEIR lives. Giving the silent secrets and the loud guidance. The Melon Man was a perfect specimen for how to devote. His passing meant a life book of feeling/knowing what gives other humans their paths to Love and Knowledge. Some humans are meant to show others their paths. And in that they secrete ways to profitably exist.Comment publication date: 3/18/26, 4:50 PMComment source: In memorium -- The Melon Man
