Book Review -- Dirt

Dirt: Adventures in Lyon as a Chef in Training, Father, and Sleuth Looking for the Secret of French Cooking by Bill Buford
Book Review -- Dirt

Writer and editor Bill Buford lives in New York City, has a great job, great wife, great twin boys, and a pretty great life. He chucks it all to move to Lyon to learn how to cook. He and his family remain there for five years.

This book recounts their adventures in what seems to me a rather unfriendly city. And Buford indeed learns to cook, meets some wonderful people, is intrigued by the history of Lyon, and generally has a wonderful time. His descriptions of recipes and food in general were way over my head but I read every word with great interest even though I’ll never cook them or eat most of the things he describes.

I’m still not sure why I picked up this book but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I’ve always thought that a good writer is someone who can hold my interest on a subject I have no interest in. Buford is in that category. I really enjoyed this book.

Carol Lloyd is the Director of the Churchill County Library. The Library is open by appointment and she is happy to see some familiar faces.

Who and what they REALLY were. Because they were devotional and IMPORTANT to the humans they connected with. The content of their life bled so that others could feel their own life’s importance. Teachers of justifiable life and art. That all can absorb and use as the best fertilizer for THEIR lives. Giving the silent secrets and the loud guidance. The Melon Man was a perfect specimen for how to devote. His passing meant a life book of feeling/knowing what gives other humans their paths to Love and Knowledge. Some humans are meant to show others their paths. And in that they secrete ways to profitably exist.Comment publication date: 3/18/26, 4:50 PMComment source: In memorium -- The Melon Man
