Food Hub Receives Department of Ag Grant

The Fallon Food Hub is connecting local farmers with hungry families to combat food insecurity in Churchill County.
Food Hub Receives Department of Ag Grant

The Fallon Food Hub, in collaboration with Epworth Methodist Church-Food Ministries and the Fallon Youth Club, has been selected for funding as a part of the NV Cares Community Food Project grant program through the Nevada Department of Agriculture.  The Fallon Farmers Care project will provide 100 boxes of locally grown produce each week to Churchill County families who have been affected by COVID-19 and the resulting economic shut-down.

The local food project, managed through the Fallon Food Hub will connect local agricultural producers with Churchill County families who have been impacted by the COVID pandemic by providing 400 boxes of local produce each month through December for 200 eligible Churchill County families. The food boxes will be distributed through Epworth Methodist Church and the Fallon Youth Club. Eligibility for the program is based on demonstration of an economic impact of the pandemic or basic food insecurity within the household.

“We are thrilled that our project designed to increase access to locally-grown produce for families in Churchill County was included for funding as a part of the NV Cares program,” said Kelli Kelly, executive director of the Food Hub. “We believe that connecting local farmers with food-insecure families in our community benefits both producers and consumers.  During these challenging times, we aim to do everything that we can to provide for families in need while also supporting our local farmers.”  Eligible households include any Churchill County resident who meets at least one of the following:

  • Tribal community member
  • Senior citizen
  • Recipient of social safety net programs including: senior & WIC farmers market coupons, unemployment, EBT, social security, or disability payments.
  • Children in household eligible for free or reduced-price student lunches
  • Household income at or below poverty or ‘low-income’ level
  • Household income impacted by business closures or furloughs

Boxes will include between 8-12 different kinds of seasonal produce at a retail value of up to $40 per box.  A July box might include: one head of romaine lettuce, two pounds of summer squash, one head of green cabbage, 12 ounces of cherry tomatoes, one bunch of salad turnips, one bag of spinach, two pounds of peaches, one bunch of carrots, two cucumbers, and one bag of kale.

The Fallon Food Hub supports farmers throughout west central Nevada including: Lattin Farms, Pioneer Farms, Salisha’s Delicious, Dayton Valley Aquaponics, Desert Farming Initiative, Two Ravens Ranch, Fisk Farms, PlantLove Homestead, and Cherry Dog Orchard.

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
