Carson City, NV — Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak issued the formal proclamation to call the Nevada Legislature into a special session beginning on Wednesday, July 8 at 9 a.m. to address the historic budget shortfall. This will be the 31st Special Session in Nevada’s history.
“I am eager to work with our Nevada lawmakers on this difficult undertaking, and finalize the necessary reductions while prioritizing resources to protect Nevada’s residents as much as possible,” said Gov. Steve Sisolak. “I understand that the COVID-19 public health crisis has put us in the position to make very painful decisions on the State budget, but I am confident we will be able to overcome this challenge together and forge a new path forward.”
The proclamation by the Governor sets the agenda for the session and limits the business that may be considered by lawmakers while in special session. Specifically, it outlines the actions the legislature may consider to address the budget shortfall.
Additionally, the proclamation allows the Legislature to consider a proposal to authorize the Clark County School District, if they choose to do so, the ability to utilize unspent funds from the school level to assist with the budgetary challenges of providing education during the COVID-19 emergency. The Legislature may also authorize the Nevada Board of Regents to implement temporary waivers or modifications to the continuing eligibility requirements for students receiving the Millennium Scholarship who were negatively impacted during the pandemic.
Once the budget shortfall is addressed and the special session is concluded, the Governor plans to issue a subsequent proclamation for the legislature to consider policy items that rise to the extraordinary occasion of a special session.
On Monday, the Governor released his Nevada COVID-19 Fiscal Report, which includes information about the State’s budget and economy pre-pandemic and details the condensed timeframe in which the State had to respond to the public health, economic and fiscal crises that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.
