Taken from Derild Parsons' report to the Board of Trustees on April 22nd:

The teachers at Northside Elementary Learning Center have been working within their unique conditions to balance their families and their students. This includes time each day developing activities, contacting parents, filling out required record keeping/contact information. They spend time researching different methods of digital instruction and they also spend time collaborating with other teachers as they navigate the turbid waters of Learning from a Distance. They hold GoToMeeting sessions for small groups, large groups. and individuals. They also attend weekly video staff meetings and other meetings (IEP, training, etc.) that are scheduled. Paraprofessionals are helping their assigned teachers complete the online training that has been assigned.

Some of the positive aspects and highlights of this situation have been a really good experience, including: Increased contact with parents, many different avenues used through technology, better understanding of students through increased parent relationships, communication with many parents is in-depth and meaningful, daily communication from many families, using technology differently, YouTube Videos are receiving lots of positive feedback.

Instruction has been provided through a variety of digital means, including Read-alouds, Music lessons, Math lessons, Science lessons, Social Emotional Learning (Community Circle), Whole class meetings and small group meetings, Students sending in pictures of them working at home with their families, One developmentally appropriate daily challenge was to use items from within your house and build a fort, Hearing and seeing the students through video technology, Created many fun lesson plans and videos (both teachers and paraprofessionals are involved in instruction from a distance).

There have been some barriers and bumps in the road that have provided great learning opportunities: Keeping track of new technology and applications that we are using, Technology issues (knowledge of and training in), Difficult to work on social/emotional and other learning from a distance, Maintaining 2-way communication with all families each week, Helping each parent with daily lessons, Home schooling our own personal children and teaching from home at the same time.
