The Cocktail Napkin – Essential Cocktails or "Jo's at Home"

The Cocktail Napkin – Essential Cocktails or "Jo's at Home"

Coronavirus. Staying at home for Nevada. Sadly, it may not be over for us for a while yet. Our essential workers are stressed and overtaxed with work, and the rest of us are out of work and restless.  Kids are schooling at home, seniors are missing out on their graduation ceremonies.

It sounds bleak and boring, but fear not.  There could be some simple, fun and even family-friendly cocktails in your future - think of it as Jo's At Home.

The meme below  was posted on Facebook, and sums up the frustration felt by many.

Whether you are an essential worker or stuck at home, how about making a different cocktail for each meal of the day? Don't take this the wrong way - I'm not advocating day-long drinking adventures here. This column is meant to be about the event of having a cocktail.

Having a special cocktail for each meal could add a little spark to the day, and could get the kids involved with designing variations to them too.  The recipes can all be made as non-alcoholic versions and can all also be made to go.

So, here's a few suggestions, hopefully using things that you may already have in your pantry.

  • Breakfast – A Breakfast Martini can be a fruity, cool and elegant way to start your morning.
  • Lunch – A Bloody Caesar can be a nice compliment to a light lunch.
  • Dinner – The Lemon Beet contains beet juice. It's been said that beet juice helps to lower blood pressure in healthy adults and increases stamina, both of which can be helpful after a long day.
  • Dessert or Snack - Smoothies are wildly variable and can also be good for you to boot.

And here are the recipes. Just eliminate the spirit to make it family-friendly.

Breakfast Martini Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Your Favorite Gin
  • 2 oz. Orange Juice
  • 1 oz. Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp. Orange Marmalade
  • 2 Orange Wheel slices

Preparation:

  • Chill a coupe or martini glass.
  • Add a scoop of ice to a cocktail shaker, then add the liquid ingredients and marmalade.
  • Squeeze one of the orange slices into the shaker and drop that in there too.
  • Cover and shake until icy cold.
  • Strain the shaker's ingredients into the chilled glass and garnish with the second orange slice.

Bloody Caesar Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Your Favorite Vodka or Gin
  • 6 oz. Clamato Juice – or use 5 oz. tomato juice and 1 oz. clam juice
  • ½ oz. Green Olive Juice
  • ½ tsp. Horseradish flakes – don't use the cream, it doesn't mix well
  • Dashes of Worcestershire Sauce, your favorite Hot Sauce, Celery Salt, Garlic Pepper, Angostura Bitters – adjust each to your taste
  • Garnishes – Pickled Green Beans, Green Olives, Martini Onions, Celery Stalk, Bacon, Lemon, Lime, Romaine Lettuce Leaf – whatever you have...
  • Seasoning for the rim

Preparation:

  • Add a good scoop of ice to a cocktail shaker, then add all ingredients except the garnishes.
  • Run a piece of lemon or lime around the rim of a tall glass then dip the rim into Salt, or a Sriracha or a Tajin style of seasoning mix.
  • Stir the contents of the shaker, then pour it into the prepared glass.
  • Have a garnish party and let the individual decorate their drink themselves.

Lemon Beet Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Your Favorite Vodka
  • 1 oz. Beet Juice
  • ¾ oz. Lemon Juice
  • Prosecco, Brut or 7-Up for the non-alcoholic version
  • Pickled Beet and Lemon Slice for garnish

Preparation:

  • Fill a tall glass with ice, add the spirit and the two juices, then stir.
  • Top off with the Prosecco, Brut or 7-Up.
  • Garnish with a toothpick skewer of the beet and lemon slice.

Smoothie Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Your Favorite Spirit
  • 4 oz. Milk or Milk Substitute (soy, coconut, almond, etc)
  • 4 oz. Yogurt, Ice Cream or Sherbet
  • ½ cup Your Favorite Fresh or Frozen Fruit
  • A Blender of some sort

Preparation:

  • Add a small scoop of ice to the blender and all ingredients, then cover and blend well.
  • Pour into a tall glass and garnish with more of the fruit that was mixed in.

Sip and enjoy them all responsibly... Ciao!
