Fallon, Nv. -- The appointment of Sean Richardson to replace Gary Cordes as clerk/treasurer for the City of Fallon was approved by the Fallon City Council at its April 6th meeting.

Cordes will be retiring from his position this year after 30 years of service with the City of Fallon. His last day will be April 30.

Richardson moved with his family to the Oasis of Nevada when his father was stationed at NAS Fallon as active duty military. Along with his older brother and younger sister, he graduated from Churchill County High School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Carroll College in Helena, Montana.

Returning to Nevada after college, Richardson served as a Certified Public Accountant with experience in public, private and governmental accounting. His employment included auditing work for the City of Fallon early in his career and seven years with the comptroller and finance offices of Churchill County and the Churchill County School District (CCSD). In addition, he spent 14 years in private industry with 13 of them as controller for Fallon Ford Toyota.

Married to Michelle, a CCSD teacher, Richardson and his wife have three children: Maxton, Camden and Miya.

According to documents submitted at the April 6th meeting of the city council, “Sean’s knowledge, education and experience, and especially his prior governmental accounting experience, will make him a great City Clerk-Treasurer.”

Council members also approved Richardson’s annual salary as City Clerk/Treasurer to be $120,000.00.

The salary was based upon the city’s completed salary survey of similar positions and its consideration of the job duties and responsibilities as well as education, skill set and professional licensure necessary to successfully perform the functions of City Clerk-Treasurer.

In other business, Police Chief Kevin Gehman gave his department’s February 2020 report which included the following: (1) 739 calls for service/total incidents; (2) a crime summary in which larceny was listed as occurring most frequently at 16 incidents; (3) an arrest summary which showed that misdemeanors decreased from 34 in January 2020 to 20 in February 2020, while felonies/GM increased during the same period from five to eight and juvenile misdemeanors rose from four to 10; (4) traffic citations and traffic warnings numbered 48 and 287, respectively; (5) traffic accidents involving public property were graphed at 12 and those involving private property at 3; and (6) 31 county animals and 59 city animals received animal shelter service.

The majority of responses to the February 2020 citizen survey of the effectiveness of Police Department employees– 11 out of 12 – were either satisfied or very satisfied. Only one response indicated “no opinion.” Individual comments were all positive, according to Police Chief Gehman’s report.

Activities and/or special events of the Fallon Police Department included visits to Lahontan Elementary to talk about theft and also bullying; participation in Numa Elementary’s Career Day; conducting door checks and hosting Student of the Month lunch at Churchill County Middle School; involvement with Churchill County High School’s Life Ready event at the Fallon Convention Center; and reading to numerous classes in local elementary schools during Dr. Suess week. Finally, during the month of February 2020, the Volunteers in Police Services (VIPs) donated 79 hours to the Fallon Police Department by assisting with administration, patrol, school zones, generator maintenance, and more.

The next meeting of the Fallon City Council is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at 9 a.m. at City Hall, 55 W. Williams Ave., Fallon. For an agenda, go to the city’s website at www.fallonnevada.gov.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
