Boy Scouts Retire the Flag

Boy Scouts Retire the Flag
by Steve Endacott -- This past Veterans’ Day evening, Boy Scout Troop 1776, also known as “Troop Independence” conducted the “Mother of all flag retirement ceremonies” at Churchill County Fair Grounds.  The theme of the event was twofold, to honor our nations veterans and to respectfully retire American flags that have past their useful life. The troop collects and receives worn flags throughout the year and normally retires a dozen or so every campout.  But over the years, the inventor of used flags has dramatically increased to the point where this special ceremony retired over 1,300 American flags. The special event was organized by passed Scout Master, and current Assistant Scout Master, Steve Cathey (retired Navy aircraft maintenance technician).  The narrator for the event was Troop Parents’ committee chairman, Jim Steele (retired Army Ranger). Overall fire safety was generously provided by the NAS Fallon’s federal fire department. Scouting is a program for boys that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, exposes them to outdoor activities, teaches resourcefulness, builds confidence and develops personal fitness.  It is also a lot of fun!!!   Troop 1776 is sponsored by Epworth United Methodist Church which is located at 280 E Stillwater Ave, Fallon.  The Troop meets every Tuesday evening at 6:30 PM in the Wolf Center.  For more information about Scouting and Troop 1776 in particular, contact Scoutmaster Jorgen Jeppesen 775-666-8406. For younger boys, aged 5-10 years, Cub Scout Pack 38 is your gateway to adventure! Pack 38 is sponsored by the Fallon Rotary Club and meets at the Churchill County Middle School Cafeteria the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM. Excellent post.. I was the Scoutmaster of the Troop onboard NAS Fallon in 1978-1980. I restarted Troop 38 on NAS. I was one of the Assistant's of Troop 30 in Fallon before that. So glad to see Scouting going there still but I seem to think the Base Troop did not survive. Sad.
