WNC – Fallon Campus enrollment rebounds

WNC – Fallon Campus enrollment rebounds
by Rachel Dahl Bus Scharmann, current Churchill County Commissioner, former Superintendent for ChurchillCSD, and retired dean of Western Nevada College, had lunch the other day with the current president of Western Nevada College, Dr. Vincent Solis, to talk about the college in Fallon, and he received good news. According to Solis, the WNC Fallon campus enrollment is growing. “Percentage-wise enrollment is up in Fallon,” said Scharmann, “while no other WNC campus is showing growth.” He said it will take some time to get numbers back up to where they were historically, but he also thinks this campus will continue to rebound. The Fallon campus has suffered over the years through a combination of the economic downturn and policy decisions made by an earlier administration. For several years a group of concerned community members, the Restore our College Campus Committee, has been actively involved with WNC leadership to restore programs and classes. Fallon Campus director Holly O’Toole has also been hard at work meeting with community leaders, has her staff doing outreach activities, and increasing the visibility of the college. Fall classes begin on Monday, August 26th, and community education classes run continuously. We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
