Senior Spotlight: Chloe Tanner
As part of a military family, senior Chloe Tanner attended a Department of Defense School. The change to Oasis meant different opportunities including a broader selection of classes. The variety of classes and dual enrollment at Oasis is something Tanner appreciates.
“My favorite class had to have been Meteorology with Professor Chris Ryan. Although I am by no means a weather forecaster, this was a truly enriching course with a passionate, enthusiastic professor,” said Tanner.
Another class she’s enjoyed is Mr. Grimes’ Government class. “One of my favorite memories at Oasis has to be my time with the sophomores in Mr. Grimes’ Government class. These bright, young individuals inspire me to put forth my best efforts each and every day.”
“My time at Oasis has been filled with educational and personal opportunities. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many wonderful teachers and professors this year who have truly impacted my education for the better,” explained Tanner. “Coach Gilbertson’s strength and conditioning class, for one, redirected my attention towards improving personal health and wellness. Additionally, I have been able to contribute my volunteer services as an Oasis Chapter National Honor Society Member. Most notably, during the first semester, I spent my afternoons volunteering for the Oasis Music Class and accompanying them in their performances. Overall, Oasis has helped me to grow as a well-rounded individual.”
Tanner will continue her studies this fall at Texas A & M University through the Mays Business School. She has received multiple scholarships and is grateful for the help she received with the scholarship application process.
“I would like to give a huge thanks to Mr. Lenon for being my cheerleader this year. In our weekly meetings, he has been the compass navigating me through the uncharted waters of senior year. I owe a lot of my success in college applications, scholarships, and senior duties to him,” said Tanner.
“For future students, I would advise an open mind and autonomy over your education. Ultimately, you are the one who has to work hard and get smart. No excuses.”
Senior Spotlight: Joshua Youles
As an accomplished and certified welder, Senior Joshua Youles will continue to develop those skills after graduation at the Western Welding Academy in Gillette, Wyoming.
Youles will not only be receiving his High School Diploma in May but also be graduating with his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Welding Technology from Western Nevada College. The experience has given him a leg up for the next step in his education.
“My favorite memory from Oasis was when they first let students attend the welding class. Without that I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Youles.
Along with Welding, Youles has two teachers he’d like to thank. “My favorite class at Oasis was History with Eric Grimes. But I would also like to thank Ms. Bogdanowicz for helping me get through high school,” continued Youles.
“My advice for any upcoming students is to keep your head down and keep on working!”
End of the Year Concert celebrates the Beatles
Music of the Fab Four filled the Convention Center on Monday, May 17 when Oasis Choir and Orchestra took the stage.
Students from Elementary, Middle and High School played and sang arrangements of Let It Be, Imagine, Lady Madonna, and closed out with a group sing-along of Ob-La-Di.
Mrs. Dana Barton has directed the choirs since the school’s inception in 2011. Mr. Mackenzie Warren started teaching orchestra this year. This is the first concert for the school since 2020.
“Monday’s concert was a long time coming. The pandemic affected everything, but for me personally, it hit our music classes hard. We all missed the joy of what we could do in music pre-Covid,” said Barton. “Monday night proved to me how much music makes us happy and brings us together. The kids were over the top excited to share their performance and I was so happy with their efforts. The room was just packed with wonderful families. I’m grateful for them and the support of our administrators. I can’t wait for the next one.”
Oasis Board Recognizes Student Accomplishments
The Oasis Academy Board took time before their May 18 meeting to honor student accomplishments for the 2021-2022 school year. Recognition included students that earned the AIT 198 Silver Industry Certificate through the dual enrollment program with Oasis and Western Nevada College, the FFA National Qualifier, All-State Academic Athletes, and Mr. Evan Brandt’s IXL Algebra II Learning Showdown second place finish in the world.
The evening also featured an art show with work from Mrs. Jill Oglebee’s Watercolor Class and Mrs. Jeanne Evatt’s Beginning Pottery class.
“Oasis Academy is so proud of our students for taking advantage of the opportunities afforded to them and capitalizing on them. They continue to add to their repertoire of accolades. We want to make sure all these outstanding accomplishments, that are outside of the regular prescribed academic course of study, are recognized. It is important that both the board and community are aware of the amazing things Oasis students are doing.” said Chief Academic Officer and Principal Ms. Rochelle Tisdale.
