Oasis Golf Hosts Golf Tournament
The Oasis Golf Team hosted a league golf match on Tuesday, April 12 at the Fallon Golf Course. The tournament saw nine schools in attendance.
Oasis Academy Senior Trevor Halloran won the tournament and fellow senior Connor Oceguera finished in seventh place. Thank you to Marty Davis and the entire Fallon Golf course staff for helping put on a first-rate tournament.
Senior Spotlight: Nallely Gomez
Support and encouragement are two words that Senior Nallely Gomez uses to describe her time at Oasis. Those feelings are also part of her favorite memory of her time at school.
“One of my greatest memories is from my freshman year when I initially arrived at Oasis Academy in the second semester. Even when I was lost and didn't know what to do on my first day of school at Oasis, I felt supported by all of my teachers. With their support, I began to feel at ease,” describes Gomez.
“I was also struggling with new material that other students had already learned, but with time, I was able to understand the content that other students had learned. I always felt encouraged by the teachers, who made sure I understood everything.”
Gomez says that level of support she received freshman year never waned. She continues, “I can state that, in comparison to my previous schools, Oasis teachers do an excellent job of teaching. When I used to go on summer vacation, I would forget everything I had learned the previous year. With Oasis, I can still recall what I've learned since the first day I started.”
She has two people she’d especially like to thank, Mrs. Cheryl Venturacci and Mr. Jake Lewis. “Mrs. Venturacci for checking in on me practically every day from my first day of school to make sure I was okay, which I will never forget. Mrs. Venturacci has constantly cared about me.”
“I'd also like to thank Math Teacher Mr. Jake Lewis. When I got stuck, he was always willing to help. He provided as many examples as necessary in order for me to comprehend the math problems. He described the math problems in such a way that anyone could comprehend them, and he double-checked that everyone understood the math problem, which I really admire. He is the best math instructor I've ever had, and he is just an amazing teacher.”
Her advice for future students? “Create goals that you want to achieve rather than goals that others want you to meet because you will come to regret not achieving what you wanted to do in the future.”
Gomez will graduate in May with both her high school diploma and Associate of Arts degree from Western Nevada College. She will start at the University of Nevada, Reno in the fall to work towards a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work.
National Honor Society Inducts New Members
Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service are the four attributes that makeup candidacy for the National Honor Society. This year Oasis inducted eleven new members into the prestigious group.
Inductees must also have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and once inducted must complete twenty service hours annually between both an organization of their choice and the Oasis Honor Society group service project.
“Working as the National Honor Society Advisor gives me a chance to see students working hard to make their world a better place. It is exciting to have eleven new members for the upcoming year. These students are full of enthusiasm and ideas for how they can serve the community. Together, we will work on building scholarship, service, leadership, and character,” says National Honor Society Advisor Mrs. Julie Stockard.
Inductees this year are Serenity Achurra, Emily Bird, Halle Feest, Kennadee Irving, Natalie Jacques, Hunter McNabb, Thanh Nguyen, Sarah Polish, Eneyde Rios, Anna Springfield, and Aubrey Vaughn.
Scholarship Night is May 11
As of now, Oasis students have been offered over $1.5 million dollars in scholarship funds from colleges and universities across the country. The students will be recognized at Scholarship Awards Night on May 11 at the Old Post Office. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Families and friends are encouraged to attend. No tickets are necessary.
All scholarship recipients will be recognized with either the scholarship donor or Oasis staff member presenting the scholarship.
Robinson finishes fourteenth in VFW Patriot's Pen Contest
After finishing first at the state level of the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot's Pen contest, Oasis eighth-grader Christina Robinson has placed fourteenth in the country. The national placement comes with a $1,000 scholarship.
Local VFW representative, Mike Terry, kept Robinson and her family aware of her essay’s progress as it went through the local, district, and state levels.
Robinson’s essay focused on this year’s theme of “How Can I Be a Good American.”
“I started by brainstorming ideas for the topic. I knew I wanted to be sure to look at it from a local perspective and how it would apply in Fallon. Patriotism was also a recurring theme I knew needed to be part of it,” describes Robinson of the process.
Robinson has participated in the contest for the past three years.
“We believe the quality education and remarkable teachers at Oasis Academy have given Chrissy the confidence and skills to write a solid essay. We hope other students are encouraged by her experience to participate in the Patriot's Pen Essay Contest. The whole experience has been wonderful, and the veterans are so incredibly supportive of the students,” adds Christina’s mother Julie Robinson.
