Graduation
Oasis Academy College Preparatory’s Graduation will be held on May 26 at 6 p.m. This year’s ceremony will again be an in-person and outdoor event in front of Pinon Hall.
Tickets are not necessary, and everyone is welcome. Students are welcome to decorate their graduation caps.
Students who are receiving their Associate of Arts degree from Western Nevada College in addition to their high school diplomas may also attend the WNC graduation on May 26th at 9 a.m. WNC’s ceremony is drive-thru graduation and students are encouraged to decorate their cars. Line up for that event will be on the east side of the Convention Center.

Students Organize Community Clean-up as Part of LEAD-On Project
Keeping the community they cherish clean is important to Oasis Academy Junior Ariana Wolf and Senior Kaitlyn Hert. That drive also made selecting a community clean-up project at Oats Park an easy choice for the two.
“We wanted to improve our community, and Ariana and I both recalled times when we have been to the park and noticed that, like all things do, it had just gotten dirty. So, we figured we would focus our project around cleaning the bigger of the two major parks here in town,” explains Hert. “We are hoping that by doing this project, we will promote similar future endeavors all across town that will help with the overall beautification of Fallon.”
The project is part of the LEAD-On program. Both students value the experience they are gaining through doing it. “The LEAD On Project has really helped me personally learn what it takes to organize a non-profit event, the funds and finances, planning, and who and where to find help and guidance from. I feel it has really helped me feel more confident in leading a project which will be very beneficial to both of us in the future. The LEAD On Program also encourages the youth in Nevada to help their communities and find ways that each individual can have fun while doing so,” describes Wolf.
The Earth Day centered dates will also help put doing something for the environment at the forefront of volunteers’ minds. The two-day clean-up is scheduled for April 15 and 22.
“This is a great family activity, and it's a good way to get active in the community. Plus, nothing beats a little fresh air and sunshine. Also, the first 25 people to sign up will get a free t-shirt, so be quick and sign up before we run out!” says Hert.
Volunteers will meet at Oats Park from noon to 4 p.m., Hert and Wolf will provide volunteers with trash bags, latex gloves, and refreshments.

Beginning to Prepare for Senior Year
Juniors are already planning for their senior year. Counselor Andy Lenon has begun weekly meetings with the students by preparing them with the necessary steps to take their senior year for college readiness.
In the next few weeks, students will delve deeper into choices in higher education, including career exploration. Students will find the best-fit school and major for their goals.
Perhaps even more critical is students becoming more aware and diligent in researching and applying for scholarship opportunities. The juniors will have tough shoes to follow. This year’s seniors have already been offered over $1.5 million dollars in scholarships.
"I am so excited about our future senior meetings. I have had these students for 6 years now and it has been so awesome to see them grow up. I can't believe they are seniors,” explains Lenon. “The focus of these meetings is relationships and support. Student support and family support are priorities. The individual planning piece of high school is crucial, so our kids have a career and academic plan. We focus on a student's passions because the end goal is to have that career that gives you that Live 4 Monday mentality."
Most juniors will have completed approximately 36 college units by the end of May. The remaining 24 units to complete their Associate of Arts degrees will be done during their senior year. The classes are at no cost to student families.

Bighorns Compete in Walker River Bow Shoot
Two Bighorn students competed in the Walker River Bow Shoot on Sunday, April 10. Bailey Peixoto finished first and Ellie Peixoto finished second for their age division.
