The Captain’s Log – Stardate 99805.66

The Captain’s Log – Stardate 99805.66

It’s a pretty good bet when this thing starts with the Stardate I have absolutely no idea what to write.

Last night was actually super exciting – for the past two weeks we’ve been working with our new little team to teach them everything and get adjusted so we are printing early on Thursday and getting the paper to the Post Office by 3 p.m. so the subscription people get their papers on Friday. For the first time in a long time all my stuff was done and in before I went to bed which gives us hope we might pull this off today.

And then when I woke up this morning I realized – no Captain’s Log. Fabulous.

There’s also a pesky little page in the back that’s driving us crazy and we can’t get right either, and the program isn’t working at all on my laptop at home. So that means early chorin’ and in to the shop early to get that solved.

The Captain’s Log was originally a one-time thing – a last minute thought the first day we printed the paper over a year ago. And then I thought it would be a cool way to journal or keep track of our progress. Over time it’s become a place to celebrate, to vent, to ramble, but going back and seeing our milestones has been quite gratifying. And it makes me realize…

Building this paper has been nothing short of amazing. I remember in the beginning it was just me and “He Who Shall Not Be Named” slogging away online figuring out how to build a WordPress site into an online newspaper. Bob was a hoot – he wanted to help but didn’t want any recognition, ever. But it was ultimately he who supported and cajoled and encouraged me enough to jump off the cliff.

We each worked from our own home and designed the whole idea of the paper that it could be run from wherever in the world I wanted to be. We tested the theory quite a bit in the beginning – I travelled a lot to Florida and it always worked to post from the road and keep the website up and running. And then COVID. It became even easier to burrow in wherever we were and post stories. The whole world picked up on our idea and went working remote.

So, all week this little team has been working away from Bass Road, Boyer Road, Lockwood, Lovelock, and some remote county in Texas, while Erin is holding down the fort at the shop. This morning I’ll take the dog in and hit “play” on Becky and our little band of volunteers will come help do labels and then someone will run to the mail at about 2:50 with their hair on fire and we will have done it.

But not unless I get this thing to our Laura in Texas so she can finish the InDesign and send it back through the ether to Becky. And while all that magic happens, we’ll be right here – wherever “here” is…

…Keeping you Posted.

Comment author: Claude EzzellComment text: Paul was one of the most manifest men I have ever met. He was a good friends with my Dad and always had an entertaining story for the occasion. One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
