Maria Lourdes Williamson, in custody, appeared for sentencing in the Tenth Judicial District Court on Tuesday before Judge Thomas Stockard.
Williams was facing two counts related to selling drugs, primary methamphetamine. She was charged with Offer, Attempt or Commission of Unauthorized act Relating to Manufacture or Compounding of Certain Controlled Substances, offenses, and Category C Felonies punishable by 1-6 years in prison.
According to ADA Chelsea Sanford, many defendants commit violent, property, and drug crimes due to drug use. “However, this defendant is not one of them. Rather, she is a drug dealer,” Sanford said. Sanford stated that Williamson participated in three controlled buys in which she sold approximately 13 grams of methamphetamines within Churchill County and was later arrested by the Task Force. Since her arrest, Williamson tested positive for meth and violated the terms of her release pending sentencing. “She may be a drug addict in addition to a drug seller,” continued Sanford, “But we can’t have individuals competent enough to sell drugs, even while they are under the influence and in the throes of their addiction. This is poison, and unfortunately, she is the dealer of this poison.” Sanford asked the Court to consider consecutive sentences of 18-60 months for each charge.
CCPD Jacob Sommer, defense counsel for Williamson, agreed with Sanford’s assessment that drugs are poison and plague our community. However, Sommer asked the Court to consider an alternative to prison and sentence his client to a diversion program. He said that she contacted New Frontier, obtained a substance abuse evaluation, and secured a bed date for treatment. “She does want to address this and has done a number of things on her own to do that,” said Sommer. Williamson addressed the Court, apologized for her actions, and asked for Drug Court.
Judge Stockard sentenced Williamson to two consecutive prison sentences of 18-60 months with 155 days credit given for time served.
