An Update on the Transfer Station – It will be a While Yet

The temporary transfer station at 327 N Maine Street will continue to be used while the Transfer Station on Enterprise Way is undergoing extensive repair.

On June 13, 2021, Fallon Churchill Fire Department was notified of a large fire at 2900 Enterprise Way.  The fire was initially reported at 6:20 p.m. Upon arrival, it became apparent the contents within the “barn” structure at the Transfer Station had caught fire. There was a significant amount of smoke and flame visible from a great distance away.

Fallon Churchill Fire responded with 13 pieces of equipment and 30 firefighters. A separate call was issued to NAS Fallon which responded with an engine and four additional firefighters. The fire departments worked for approximately six hours to bring the fire under control while providing protection to the structure itself.

Immediately following the incident, Lumos & Associates conducted a full assessment of the building’s structural integrity.  The results of that assessment indicated that the building’s steel arch structure and concrete walls sustained damage due to the excessive temperatures. The severity of the damage to both the steel and concrete will require the city to replace several sections of the steel arch and repair portions of the concrete walls.

According to Brian Byrd, Public Works Director, the city has ordered all the replacement components needed to repair the facility. “Unfortunately, supply chain issues have forced the project to be delayed several months,” he said. “We understand the inconvenience this may have caused,”

It is anticipated that the Transfer Station on Enterprise Way will reopen in late spring or early summer. Until the repairs have been completed at Enterprise Way, the city has committed to operating the temporary transfer station on Maine Street.  In an attempt to alleviate the burden of using the temporary station, the city will continue to keep the disposal costs low at $5 a load. The cost of disposal is cash only. Recycling, burning barrels, tires, furniture, and household trash is accepted. Scrap metal is accepted at no charge. No hazardous waste or liquids, of any kind, are permitted.

The temporary transfer station is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
