Excitement filled the air at the main entrance of Churchill County High school this morning as students bustled through the halls while staff and teachers helped them find classes and answered questions. New principal Mr. Tim Spencer was busy introducing himself to every student in his path. He was just as excited as his students, especially to see their enthusiasm as they reunited with each other.
The halls were full of voices and hugs, in stark contrast to the deserted silence across campus.
Huge smiles cross the students’ faces as they greeted one another like they haven’t seen each other in years. They talked excitedly about how it felt being back full-time.
Lillian Kranzler, a junior said she was, “really excited, but it's really crowded.”
Her twin Kaitlynn said she was “excited and happy!”
Some students expressed other feelings. Isaac Davis said, “I have a love/hate relationship with school but ultimately happy to be back.”
Trista Dorman said, “the social anxiety is a lot for me right now.”
Because of the long year last school year primarily online, as well as the lockdown the year before, many students expressed various levels of discomfort and anxiety but always saying they were glad to finally be back.
Vice-Principal Rachel Knight was surprised to see how well the kids were adjusting to coming back full time and how excited they were.
Mr. Spencer held a spontaneous “Welcome Back” assembly in the gym, calling staff and students to the gym immediately after the roll was called. After two years of no assemblies, students filled the bleachers in an atmosphere of school spirit. Mr. Spencer had their full attention as soon as he asked for a volunteer and rewarded her willingness with a twenty-dollar bill. “That’s what happens when you volunteer with me.”
He knows this will be an amazing year, and is dedicated to building the Greenwave culture and bringing back the high school experience. "Today was a breath of fresh air. Kids and staff were excited to be here. This is the positive momentum needed to start our year," said Spencer.
