Book Review - Islands of Abandonment: Nature Rebounding in the Post-Human Landscape by Cal Flyn

Book Review - Islands of Abandonment: Nature Rebounding in the Post-Human Landscape by Cal Flyn

Cal Flyn, an investigative journalist, takes a look at places around the world that have been abandoned where humans are no longer present, and yet nature has rebounded and thrives.

Included in his examination are Chernobyl and the results of its nuclear winter, the man-made disaster that is the Salton Sea in California, a visit to a long-abandoned farm on an island off the coast of Scotland, and more.

Flyn describes why each place came to be vacant of people and the natural ramifications of their absence. Even in places where it seems like the natural world has no hope of recovery, often due to high levels of toxicity, nature rebounds. This is a fascinating read.
