Tourism Authority Awards Grants to Promote Community

Tourism Authority Awards Grants to Promote Community

The City of Fallon’s Convention & Tourism Authority awarded $86,500 in grants to local organizations at their regular meeting in April 2021. Jane Moon, Director of Tourism and Special Events, presented each grant application and funding request to the authority board members.

The three-member board, Chairwoman and City Council member Kelly Frost, along with board members and local hotel owners Jay Bhakta and Ezra Bernardo heard from representatives of each organization before approving the requested funding.

  • The Lahontan Valley Bird Dog Club received $2,500 for efforts to promote the Lahontan Valley Bird Dog Chukar Championship.

  • The Cowboy Fast Draw Association received $14,500 to promote the Fastest Gun Alive – World Championship of Cowboy Fast Draw competition held in Fallon every October.

The purpose of the grants is to promote Fallon events. These annual events attract people from outside the area to come to the community and spend money on food at local restaurants, buy fuel, and stay in local lodgings. Mayor of Fallon Ken Tedford said the funding awarded to the City of Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority grantees comes from room taxes collected by local hotels and motels.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses. Her dad Ted was my dad's brother. I never knew Ted or Betty, but I wish I did. I am 73 and live in IL. I am building my family tree and see where Betty has fit in. Blessings to you Curt and family.
