A Community Icon: American Legion Post 16

Everyone has heard of the American Legion. Or nearly everyone. But what is this organization that sponsor local scholarships and has Friday Night Fish Fries?

You might not know that Congress chartered the American Legion in 1919; the group was established to focus on supporting veterans, service members, and communities. The American Legion proved to be instrumental in forming what we now know as the Veterans Administration. To this day, they continue to lobby for funding to provide medical, disability, and other desperately needed services for veterans worldwide.
During a Legion conference in 1920, the Flag Code, was drafted and later adopted by Congress. Then, in 1943 the GI Bill of Rights was drafted, which is said to be the most outstanding achievement of the American Legion. Demanding a full accounting of all POWs and MIAs, the GI Bill of Rights is one of the loudest fights the Legion still battles over. This non-profit organization's members continue to demand better for all veterans, service members, and their families.

The members of the American Legion Post 16, located in Fallon, Nevada, are indeed an institution, serving the community and their brothers and sisters in arms for 100 years this September. If you are currently serving or are the family member of someone who has served, take a moment to join Post 16, where you will find dozens of resources and a sense of camaraderie that is unmatched. Located at 90 N Ada Street is a historic building brought to Fallon from Hawthorne and is the home of Post 16. With a meeting hall, and a small watering hole that is open to the public, many great stories are passed from one generation to the next.

Like most non-profit organizations, the American Legion Post 16 relies on community fundraiser events to continue their mission and lobby for continued changes that veterans and service members alike rely on to integrate back into life outside the various service branches. If you visit American Legion Post 16 on Facebook, you can see the weekly events hosted in the meeting hall.

He was a good friends with my Dad and always had an entertaining story for the occasion. One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N Pflimlin
